som denne mannen;

Lost the stupid heater hose that goes from the back of the head to that

triangular switchover valve AGAIN on my 89 300CE. Managed to talk the folks at

the dealership to stay late until the wrecker could get me there. They gave me

a brand new 2005 C240 as a loaner, with less than 400 miles on it. After two

days with the loaner (they had to order the hose), I managed to gather some

opinions. Although there is no diesel directly involved in this, I think it

reflects on the W124 versus the latest C class (W203?), and I'm strongly

considering a W124 diesel as my next Benz.

Other than the fact that everything worked on the C, I strongly prefer my W124.

Observations on the C240:

*Much quicker steering, but much less centering pull/feel (and smaller

steering wheel).

*Less feel in the brakes: consistent pressure required all the way down,

as opposed to the more progressive requirement on my coupe.

*"Intelligent adaptive" automatic tranny ain't my cup o' tea. I can barely

feel the shifts, and they take too long. I like the firm, quick shifts of

my less intelligent one.

*The 2.6 V6 is rated in the same ballpark as my 3.0 M103, and I'm sure the new

car is lighter, but my old one definitely feels faster. Maybe it's the flat

power band of the new setup, but I like the old school buildup of power all

the way to redline. My coupe also feels more responsive in the 2000-2500 rpm

range.

*FUEL ECONOMY IS ACTUALLY WORSE IN THE NEWER CAR. Onboard computer said I was

getting just below 21mpg on my standard 30 mile (each way) commute. Even with

my coupe's less than perfect condition, she gets 21 or 22 on that same

commute, and has reached 23 or 24 in the past.

*Seats were less comfortable, both in the lumbar and tailbone areas.

*Window switches are all on the driver's door. I know it's cheaper this way

when it's assembled in modules from suppliers, but I just don't like it.

*Too quiet. I guess they're no longer proud of the engine sounds.

*Sun visors feel like anybody else's thin ones, with a single small light in

the roof instead of the two lights flanking the vanity mirror.

*I sit fairly tall, and the bottom third of the hood ornament/gunsight is

still obscured by the hoodline.

On the plus side,

*Less lean in corners.

*Factory cup holders.

*Everything works, inclulding the air conditioning.

*Steering wheel buttons for some system settings and the radio, although they

only supported seek tuning. You have to reach over to the real radio to use

the buttons for saved radio stations.

*Rear foglight. I never did look at it, but the headlight switch pulls out two

clicks, and a different indicator light comes on at the second click.
